Whenever I speak to my kid’s friends and ask them “If they enjoy doing Yoga” usually the answer is “OH NO”! So slow and it is for old people not for us. The fact that they are saying “No” or reluctantly attending the sessions is that they are seeing Yoga just as a form of exercise like any other workout.

The slow and steadiness is the key ingredient of yoga which works on all dimensions of the body. Scientifically its proven that when you perform any kind of exercise whether it is yoga, weight training, running, cycling, swimming the happy hormones are like dopamine, oxytocin, Serotonin and Endorphins are released in the body. Lets understand what happens actually when we practice yoga.

The common misconceptions:

Yoga is too slow: As you start practicing and get into a pose you want to feel and realize the changes happening in the body and how your mind is preparing itself to accept that change. To realise this, your body and mind need some time to exchange this info. Hence we insist to practice yoga slowly. Yoga has different formats some are slow, some are fast and energizing. We are free to choose what suits our body.

Connection with the mind: Accepting the change and preparing yourself for the next move with a positive attitude.

Yoga is Just stretching: When you stretch, the muscles relax and strengthen which allows range of motion and increases blood flow supplying essential nutrients to the body.

Connection with the mind : Think big and beyond your limitations .

Yoga is for old people: The number of metabolic disorder diseases are more in younger generation not in Old people this is purely due to the practice of yoga in some or the other form like sitting and moping the floor, grinding batters and masala with the help of a stone grinder not the machine, sitting and washing the clothes with hands. People used to sit down and eat for a good digestion. The activities grinding with hands, sitting and moping, batter preparation with the stone grinder are the forms of yoga like malasan, padmasana or vajrasana. Now a days we have to put in some effort to include these actions into our daily routine.

Connection with the mind: Let not your physical body be an obstacle for your mental and spiritual growth.

Yoga takes longer time to practice: People often ask is it possible to to do yoga in for only 10 mins will i get any benefit ? The answer is absolutely yes. One surya namaskar takes an average of 20-25 seconds but it is a combination of 12 asanas. Even if you practice 5 surya namaskars per day it wont take more than 3-4 mins. In 10 mins you can perform good number of repetitions. Those 12 asanas cover your chest, back, neck, abdomen , arms, shoulders and legs . Yoga need not be done for a longer durations. On the other hand you can just pickup few asanas and quickly wrap it up in 10mins.

Connection with the mind: Any practice takes good amount of time to realise your potential and it might take several days, months or years depending upon your commitment, hardwork and determination.
