“Vinayak,” Nikita said, “I keep hearing AI will replace many entry-level jobs. How will Rohan find good opportunities when he graduates? I’m really worried.”
I hear this concern often from parents feeling overwhelmed by AI’s impact on their children’s futures. Recently, Nikita, mother of Grade 11 student Rohan, came to me with the same anxiety.
Her worry is understandable. But it opens a bigger conversation about how we can help our kids thrive in an AI-driven world.
While AI may replace some jobs, it also creates new roles and industries. Sam Altman, co-founder of ChatGPT, said, “AI is going to eliminate a lot of current jobs... and it’s going to create entirely new jobs.”
This isn’t the first time we’ve faced such change. When computers and the internet arrived, many feared job losses, but new careers emerged.
For Rohan, who loves ecology and environmental science, the outlook is positive. These fields are less likely to be disrupted soon. Still, no one really knows what the future holds—Altman’s sign says, “No one knows what happens next.”
What matters most are skills AI can’t replace: creativity, strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and leadership.
I also advise students like Rohan to take AI-related electives. Learning to use AI as a tool will keep them relevant. Imagine an environmental scientist using AI to discover new insights—that’s the future.
In the end, Nikita smiled as Rohan talked about combining his passion with technology. With the right skills and mindset, our children won’t just face the future—they’ll shape it.
